Chiropractic Adjustments:

Joint manipulation (AKA an “adjustment”) of the spine and extremities will be utilized based on the needs of the patient. Joint evaluation will involve motion palpation to assess if and where a patient needs manipulation. Motion palpation is a biomechanically sound technique for the assessment of joint function. Joint manipulation techniques taught by Palmer College of Chiropractic and the Motion Palpation Institute will be utilized whenever manipulation is necessary. We have low force adjustments for those who need special considerations. Some other techniques used include: Flexion-Distraction, Activator, Impulse, Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson, and McKenzie.

Soft Tissue / Myofascial Release:

Soft tissues techniques are used when a muscle, tendon, or ligament is overly tight, painful, or does not function properly. The clinicians of Lake Mills Chiropractic have extensive training in numerous soft tissue techniques; namely Active Release Technique (ART), Graston Technique (GT), and Post-Isometric Relaxation (PIR). ART involves breaking up adhesions in the soft tissues by having the patient go through various motions while the doctor applies a very specific pressure to the area being treated. GT uses instruments, rather than the doctor's hands, to apply pressure to break up adhesions. PIR is a muscle relaxation technique that has been found to be very effective at releasing tension in tight muscles as well as treating trigger points. The wide variety of soft tissue techniques lets the doctor choose what is best for each patient/condition. www.activerelease.com www.grastontechnique.com

Therapeutic Exercise / Rehabilitation:

Exercise and rehabilitation may be an important component of your recovery. Some exercises are focused on getting weak muscles or movements stronger (Stability). Other exercises may be focused on getting your muscles and soft tissue to relax through stretching or rolling (Mobility). Our facility has a designated rehab space with all the tools you need to get stronger and move better. Our rehabilitation programs are specific to your needs. Some patients may need one on one exercise instruction with each visit, while others may need a home care program.

Foot Orthotics:

Orthotics are really for anyone with an issue or discomfort relating to walking or imbalances in the body that are known to cause related pain. The great benefit of orthotics is that they can be worn on a daily basis and be utilized during most activities to take further stress of the body.

Orthotics can often be prescribed by your chiropractor and can last well over a year in most cases. This is a great investment into your overall health and well being via a biomechanical standpoint.

Cold Laser

Low Level Laser / Light Therapy (LLLT) is a light source treatment that generates light of a single wavelength of light or range of wavelengths. LLLT emits no heat, sound, or vibration. Instead of producing a thermal effect, LLLT may act via nonthermal or photochemical reactions in the cells, also referred to as photobiology or biostimulation.

Laser radiation and monochromatic light may alter cell and tissue function. Laboratory studies suggest that irradiation stimulates collagen production, alters DNA synthesis, and improves the function of damaged neurological tissue. Several mechanisms underlying therapeutic effects with LLLT have been suggested. Theories include:

* Increased ATP production by the mitochondria and increased oxygen consumption on the cellular level, which may result in muscle relaxation
* Increased serotonin and increased endorphins
* Increased anti-inflammatory effects through reduced prostaglandin synthesis
* Improved blood circulation to the skin in cases like neuralgia and diabetes mellitus
* Decreases permeability of the membrane of the nerve cells for Na/K causing hyperpolarisation
* Increased lymphatic flow and decreased edema

Athletic trainers, chiropractors, practitioners of alternative medicines, and physical therapists have used LLLT to treat a variety of disorders. Indications include carpal tunnel syndrome, joint disorders and tendinopathies, lateral and medial epicondylitis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, ankle sprains, venous ulcers, and decubitus ulcers.

Intersegmental Traction (Roller Table)

Intersegmental traction (IST) is an effective chiropractic therapy that induces passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching spinal joints and increasing mobility. IST helps to gently and effectively reestablish normal range of motion to your spine. Like a massge chair or bed, you lay on the table and the roller gently goes up and down your spine. It feels great and many patients love to add this service before their adjustment to "get loosened up!"

Myovision Scan

MYOVISION is a computerized tool used to detect nervous system interference (via thermography) and spinal muscle asymmetry and spasm (via electromyography).

Surface Electromyograph (sEMG) measures the amount of electrical activity your muscles release when they are contracting (spasming). When your spine misaligns and rubs against the nerves, your muscles spasm in order to stabilize the area of misalignment. Myovision picks up this interference by reading the electrical activity of the muscles and graphing the results according to those readings. A print out of the patient's back, and areas of concern, is then printed and discussed to further educate our patients on the cause of their condition.

Electric Muscle Stim

Electrical Muscle Stimulation is an exceptional way to help the body in the healing process. This is accomplished by sending a very small electrical current into the affected soft tissue injury or muscle spasm. The therapy utilizes this current in an effort to help reduce swelling and release trigger points that may have the muscle locked up. It does this by helping the body to release natural relievers of pain often referred to as endorphins.

This is a great therapy if there is a spasm in a back or neck muscle. It works well in relaxing the muscle and allowing it to return to its normal state rather quickly. Short therapy sessions are excellent at facilitating healing from acute and chronic pain.

Whole Body Vibration

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) originated in Europe and has been evolving over the last 50 years. Numerous scientific studies have validated the benefits of WBV in regards to bone density and osteoporosis, increased circulation, efficient muscle toning, and more! Many medical doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors have used WBV to speed recovery and increase muscle strength. Astronauts have even used WBV theory to combat the osteoporosis and muscle atrophy caused by the weightless environment of space. The WBV works on the cellular level to increase circulation and muscle activity which can help heal an injury in less time. WBV has also been used with conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, stroke, and scoliosis.
