Low Level Laser/Light Therapy

Low Level Laser / Light Therapy (LLLT) is a light source treatment that generates light of a single wavelength of light or range of wavelengths. LLLT emits no heat, sound, or vibration. Instead of producing a thermal effect, LLLT may act via nonthermal or photochemical reactions in the cells, also referred to as photobiology or biostimulation.

Laser radiation and monochromatic light may alter cell and tissue function. Laboratory studies suggest that irradiation stimulates collagen production, alters DNA synthesis, and improves the function of damaged neurological tissue. Several mechanisms underlying therapeutic effects with LLLT have been suggested. Theories include:

  • Increased ATP production by the mitochondria and increased oxygen consumption on the cellular level, which may result in muscle relaxation
  • Increased serotonin and increased endorphins
  • Increased anti-inflammatory effects through reduced prostaglandin synthesis
  • Improved blood circulation to the skin in cases like neuralgia and diabetes mellitus
  • Decreases permeability of the membrane of the nerve cells for Na/K causing hyperpolarisation
  • Increased lymphatic flow and decreased edema

Athletic trainers, chiropractors, practitioners of alternative medicines, and physical therapists have used LLLT to treat a variety of disorders. Indications include carpal tunnel syndrome, joint disorders and tendinopathies, lateral and medial epicondylitis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, ankle sprains, venous ulcers, and decubitus ulcers.

There are several hundred double-blind Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) studies that show clear evidence that LLLT is highly effective for the following conditions:

  • chronic pain
  • acute (traumatic) pain
  • neck, back pain
  • tendonitis
  • sports injuries
  • painful trigger-points
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • tennis/golfer elbow
  • acne, eczema
  • inflamm. skin conditions
  • wounds and burns
  • non-healing ulcers
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • fibromyalgia
  • lymphedema
  • osteoarthritis
  • migraines
  • postherpetic neuralgia
  • scars and keloids
  • sinusitis, tonsilitis
  • TMJ disorders
  • hearing loss
  • Meniere's Disease
  • tinnitus
  • vertigo

Come in today to find out if you are a candidate for laser therapy and experience the beneficial effects of LLLT.
